Why Pretending Isn’t Just for the Movies

While watching Ford v Ferrari with Sam, I commented on how Matt Damon (playing Carroll Shelby) just nails every role he takes on.

Whether it be the action hero as Jason Bourne, as Sonny Vaccaro in Air, a crooked cop in The Departed, a gruff military guy in Oppenheimer, Matt Damon has this uncanny ability to reel you in every time.

But maybe his best portrayal is as Tom Ripley in The Talented Mr. Ripley. Here, Tom Ripley was so desperate to be someone else, he assumed Dickie Greenleaf's identity while crossing every line imaginable.

It’s a great story and something that many of us might be living our own version of this story at work…

Now don’t worry, I’m not saying you’re a killer swapping your identity like a Hollywood character!

But think about it: how often have you felt overwhelmed but pretended everything was fine?

How often have you feared that admitting you’re struggling would expose you as a "fraud"?

This is where imposter syndrome creeps in…

At work, it might look like hiding behind a mountain of tasks, secretly hoping no one notices you’re barely holding it together, let alone achieving much...

Sure, you might get some sympathy from colleagues because, well, everyone’s kind of swamped nowadays, right?

But underneath, it’s not just about the workload - it’s about the sleepless nights, the frustrations, the stress, and the fear that someone will see through the facade…

It’s a heavy burden to carry alone if you haven't got the energy or don’t know how to break free…

Yet, you don’t have to do so alone…

If you’re feeling like Tom Ripley, minus the criminal activities, it might be time to talk it out.

There’s no shame in saying, “Hey, I’m struggling with this.”
