Leadership Without Burnout: Peter’s Wake-Up Call

Ever felt like you’re juggling flaming swords while riding a unicycle?

That’s how Peter responded when I first met him and asked how he was.

Unfortunately, I knew what Peter meant after experiencing that feeling 20 years ago when I was a regional leader for a US multinational.

That’s because that was how managing a team, and my own workload seemed like on most days back then.

There was always one more email, one more crisis to address, and before I knew it, I was the last to leave the office again.

By the time I got home it would be bedtime for the kids - family time and my personal well-being had taken a backseat yet again…

Peter topped me though when he told me about the turning point for him being one particularly chaotic week when he thought he had everything under control.

Spoiler alert: Peter didn’t…

Peter was so focused on ticking things off his To-Do list that he completely forgot about a team meeting.

Not just any meeting - a strategy session with his leadership team…

Let’s just say such a high-level visible error like this wasn’t Peter’s finest moment.

Peter ended up scrambling to try and recover the situation, but he conceded he was overworked, while realising that trying to do everything was a recipe for burnout.

Hopefully you haven’t experienced a monumental “cock-up” like Peter’s, but you’re not alone if you have forgotten important priorities or just haven't had the energy to tackle them…

As leaders, we’re often pulled in a million directions, trying to balance the demands of the business, the team, and our personal lives.

The real kicker?

You can’t lead your team effectively, perform at your best or be there for your family when you’re running on empty.

The key isn’t in doing more; that’s a trap lots of conscientious leaders’ default to.

Instead, the secret is in saving time, then managing it and your workload in a way that helps you focus on the priorities that matter most…

Like strategic thinking and execution.

Team development.

All the while still having time to breathe and enjoy life…

If you’re tired of feeling stretched thin and want to lead your team without sacrificing your personal well-being, then maybe it’s timely to do something about it just like Peter did.

What I do is I help leaders like you reclaim time, reduce overwhelm, and achieve meaningful results without adding more to your plate.

You don’t have to wait for chaos to strike before making a change. Let’s work together to get ahead of it!
